- Solar activity was up a bit last week, and there was even a period
- when the geomagnetic activity was quiet. Solar flux was higher by a
- average of about 13 points compared to the previous week, and May 12
- and 13 had some periods when the K index was as low as one.
-
- Solar flux should very gradually decline over the next couple of
- weeks, reaching a low around 75 at the end of the month when a
- recurring coronal hole returns to view. At that time conditions
- will be very disturbed for at least a week.
-
- Sunspot Numbers from May 12 through 18 were 45, 71, 67, 55, 58, 59
- and 58, with a mean of 59. 10.7 cm flux was 87.4, 89.5, 90.2, 91.4,
- 91.4, 95 and 93.6, with a mean of 89.8.
-
- The projection for this week is from the Hawaiian Islands to the
- Mariana Islands.
-
- 80 meters looks good from 0830 to 1630z, with the peak period from
- 1100 to 1530. Check 40 meters from 0700 to 1730, and 30 meters from
- 0600 to 1830. 20 meters should be open from around the clock,
- except around 1800 to 1900. The best period on 20 meters should be
- from 0830 to 1600. 17 meters should be good from 2000 to 1200,
- peaking toward the end of the period. Check 15 meters from 2130 to
- 0830, and on some days until 1100. 12 meters should be open from
- 2230 to 0600, and 10 meters from 0000 to 0500.

- My first rig was a Heathkit HW-16. I built it but it didn't work. I had an
- "elmer" who was not a ham, but had been a radio operator in the Navy. He
- helped (translated: I watched while he worked) me get the thing working by
- locating a bad solder joint or several and a few other fixes. The light bulb
- I brought for a dummy load finally (no pun intended:) lit up.
-
- This is where my memory gets fuzzy. My first contact was with WN4LUR in Tennessee
- on 40 CW (7175000000 mc to bring another thread into the fray, or is that to fray
- another thread :-). I don't remember much about the QSO itself except
- the butterflies and shaking that I experienced. I have a QSL for the contact.
- The callsign database says that WB4LUR is still licensed. I want to
- get in touch with him as the 25th anniversary of that QSO approaches. I was
- a 15 years old in June 1969 when I made my first contact.
-
- I have 4 or 5 logbooks filled, too, but back then I listed every CQ and every
- call which went unanswered.

-
- Ah, my first QSO... :)
-
- Well now let's see. As I cast my memory back in time ... Oops, I missed.
- ... :) Let's try that cast again, shall we?.... Ah. Much better.
-
- I got interested in ham radio in 1987, spring. Why? Because of a book I
- found in the library called _How To become A Radio Amateur_, copyright
- 1950. I'd heard of ham radio but never saw much in there for me. But I
- picked up the book anyway, read it, didn't understand some, but did see
- something there that sounded like a *lot* of fun. So I got more stuff! I
- learned the code out of a book (and had it all screwed up too, BTW--but
- that problem soon worked itself out), studied, and, within a couple
- months I had a receiver to listen to. Eventually I took the test--well
- that happened in September. One month later--in fact, on October 24, at
- about oh, I'd say 5:15 or thereabouts, I got my license. Unfortunately, I
- don't have that original, or for that matter, my first General, or my
- Advanced ... anymore. :( Ah, for lost history... Needless to say, I was
- excited! I was a little disappointed though, because I really wanted
- KB5LID as my call. Why? Oh. That's easy--so I could be a really topknotch
- op and not be offended if someone called me a lid. I got over it though,
- because my call had (and, well still does) such a good rhythm on cw. So I
- practiced up for the first QSO, which I had on a Saturday, November 7
- actually, a mere two weeks after I got my license. Nice day, November 7
- ... :) I went to my elmer's house (that's Steve, KG5BR) with my straight
- key. We tuned around on the 15-meter novice band, still one of my
- favorite bands, by the way, and heard a cq... I was a little nervous, you
- know, the cold sweaty palms and all that, but I didn't have a problem
- copying, amazingly enough. But Steve was there to copy along anyhow. My
- first QSO was with Bob, KA1 JDG (or was is GDJ?), in...I'll be
- damned...Farmington, CT? I think? I don't even remember! Anyway, I then
- made another with WA9YMI, switched to 10-meter ssb, made a couple more,
- then off to 40 cw for another, and then homeward bound. It was great! Oh,
- and then a few weekends after I worked the 10-meter contest, and a couple
- months after, Novice Roundup (ended up second in my section if you
- believe)...
-
- BTW I was probably only one of a few 20 wpm novices for a while, about a
- month actually, for what it's worth...
-
- Now, 6.5 years later, four licenses up the ladder (Got the Extra two
- years ago...has it really been that long?), a bunch of QSO's later, I'm
- still active, and I still love ham radio, and I dearly love cw. Not a big
- contester though. Ham radio has been one of the best things I've done so
- far, and it's really become an amazingly important part of my life. Never
- would have thought, I suppose... :)
-
- First contact on my own rig, now that wasn't nearly as exciting because
- it was only across town on 10 meters...

-
- I wouldn't want a half-bombed kitten climbing up my pantsleg either.
-
- Hmmm, well, my first QSO was sort of bootlegged as well, or would
- have been, had it worked. I borrowed a 2-watt 80m rig from my Elmer
- and for some reason when I attempted to answer a CQ for my first QSO
- I sent the call of the club station I belonged to, rather than my own.
- I have no idea why I did that. It didn't matter, since I forgot to
- switch the antenna over to 'transmit' anyway.
-
- After two weeks I was a pro and had 11 countries worked with those
- 2 watts on 80, the best DX being Finland (I was a G3 at the time).
- I even wrote up the experience for The Shortwave Mag, a fairly glossy
- mag published in the UK at that time (1958, ack). I still have a
- photocopy of the article.
-
- When I got licensed here after a lapse of 25 yrs or so, I was not
- going to let it take up as much time as it did earlier, was just
- going to have a few casual QSOs now and then when I felt like it.
- Only have 10 countries left to work now.... There are lots of
- books on how to get into amateur radio, none on how to get out

- You asked about detecting subcarriers, you need a special circuit to
- do that. Regular FM braodcast is wideband and subcarriers require
- narrowband detection.

- I've started a mailing list for Yaesu FT990 owners. If you'd like to
- subscribe, send a message to 990-request@xyzoom.info.com stating your
- wish. There are only about 6 subscribers so far, and volume is very
- low, but perhaps it could be useful (in fact I appreciate low-volume
- mailing lists better than the other kind). The address for the list
- is 990@xyzoom.info.com.
